Mentoring Program

One of the conclusions after the first year of the program is to select younger (Grade
9 and 11) and dedicated learners. It was decided to select Grade 8 resp 10 learners
from Hout Bay and Silikamva High School

30th October 2017, 8am - Information to interested learners at Silikamva High School and
distribution of application forms

A delegation of Rotaracters (Kimberly, Lungile and Phumelela) presented the mentorship program to learners of grade 8 and 10 at “Silikamva High” in IY. They went to all their class rooms. The reaction was mixed with some not seeming interested, some not understanding the explanation in English, but some wanting to know more depending also on the teachers.
One teacher especially emphasised the opportunity they would have to be helped finding the right subject for studying, finding out about possibilities for bursaries, getting tutoring if necessary, and most important getting out of the circle of unemployment, bad paid jobs and poverty. Kimberly, Lungile and Phumelela who are students at different universities emphasised that they want to assist learners as they didn’t have this opportunity themselves.
4 November interested learners were interviewed to find out if they are really committed to meet their mentors regularly, to work hard und to wanting to study. About 160 learners filled in their names and details.
16 learners showed up from the 24 which where invited from grade 10. The Rotaractors could not get hold of the other kids as they either don’t have phones or did not submit their contact details.
